It’s Friday night and the week is over. The Zorn Dining Commons is serving fish again but Keene State College students are craving pizza. Who do they call? No, not Ghost Busters, they call Athens Pizza on Main Street in Keene.
For the second year in a row, Athens Pizza has won best pizza slice and it is no surprise. Co-Owner Chris Glienakis said they take pride in their pizza.
“We love serving our customers,” he said.
Glimenakis and his brother Jim have co-owned the Keene location since 1981. Other than the Keene Athens, there are three other locations: two in Leominster, Mass., and one in Bellows Falls, VT. According to Glimenakis, Athens in Keene sells hundreds of pizzas each week and the college has been good for business. Along with offering a ten percent discount to students who show their student IDs, Athens has offered a variety of ways to save money.
“We like to give back to the campus too,” Glimenakis said.
KSC senior Luke Dube said he can remember getting out of a late class and rushing to Athens to get a spinach, hamburger and feta cheese pizza.
“It was the best thing at that time of night,” Dube said. He said he can taste that the food is homemade and not processed.
Dube said he also enjoys the atmosphere.
“I like the Greek theme, it’s not just a gimmick. I like how they take it seriously,” Dube said.
Glimenakis said that 95 percent of the food is homemade. Athens does not use Individually Quick Frozen ingredients that some other pizza places use.
“We are picky with our food,” he said.
Customers have a choice of over 20 toppings for their pizza but Glimenakis said pepperoni has always been number one.
The awards for Athens don’t stop here. For 14 straight years Athens has won the Market Surveys of America Best Pizza in the Area award.
